Preparing for the
Interview
You have applied for your dream job
and now you have been asked in for that crucial interview. You now have
questions about preparing for the interview. If you have applied through an
agency, your initial interview will most likely be with an agent who's
objective is to prepare a short list of around three candidates from a
larger group, but that does not mean you should take this interview any less
seriously than if it was an interview with the employer directly.
In preparing for the interview, keep in mind that first impressions are very
important, so dressing appropriately and attending the interview on time is
crucial. Punctuality and reliability are two behaviours that all employers
look for in a potential employee. What to wear? Business wear, which for
males means suit and tie, and for women means a business suit or other
appropriate corporate wear. You are selling yourself in an interview, so get
that first impression right.
Preparing for the interview also means being mentally alert. Get plenty of
sleep and do your research. If you make it through the initial agency
interview, your knowledge about the employer, and about the position will
earn you points. Ask the agent for a position description so you can target
your answers towards what the position description entails.
Remember that during the interview there will be a time when the agent or
employer will ask you if you have any questions. This is where your research
will pay off. Also, as a rule, on a copy of your resume have a list of
questions to ask, or important points or facts that you think will give you
an edge over the other candidates.
Relax before the interview, and don't allow stress to keep you from being
focused. We have given you a plan for preparing for the interview, so just
remember, do your best and keep trying until you get that dream job. |
